Causes of Erectile Dysfunction in Young Men

Most of us associate ED with older men, however it is more common in younger men than we used to think. It should be understood that it is not the age, but rather a unique state of mental and physical health that determines the risks for the dysfunction. And while there are a number of viable options for ED treatment, with which you can acquaint yourself at, they all depend on the root cause of the dysfunctionitself rather than on age.

Causes of erectile dysfunction in young men are mostly of psychological nature. For example, if a man can get an erection on his own, but cannot with his partner, it means his problem is rooted in performance anxiety or a deeper psychological problem. Anxiety and tension may arise from poor communication with the partner or disagreements in sexual preferences. Other psychological factors that may contribute to ED are:

  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Fatigue
  • Personal sexual fears
  • Inferiority feelings
  • Childhood sexual abuse
  • Rejection by parents or peers
  • Relationship issues
  • Sexual orientation issues.

For men whose ED is caused by psychological factors, psychotherapy and depression treatmentmay be needed.

While physical factors of ED in older men are issues like hypertension, diabetes and heart problems, ED in younger men is more likely to arise from physical trauma, i.e. injury to nerves and arteries in the penile area. This can be a result of sports injury, such as long-term bike riding or surfboard hit in the wrong area, or sexual injury, such as making love in the woman-on-top position.

Hormonal disorders are more likely to affect young men who take steroids to build muscle mass.Low testosterone or increased prolactin production may also add to ED in younger males.

Lifestyle causes of ED in younger men include recreational drugs, smoking and alcohol.  Substance abuse causes blood vessel damageand dulls sensations, making it difficult to become sexually aroused.

Regardless of age erectile dysfunction is a symptom that needs diagnosis. Depending on the cause your doctor will be able to treat impotence properly.
