Swine Flu and Your Health-are we falling behind as a nation?
This is a subject on everyone’s mind since since the nation declared a public health emergency yesterday. Although there have only been 20 cases reported in the U.S., non fatal, it still stirs up an alarm of gaps in our scientific system. It is important that we educate ourselves on this swine flu outbreak. A great article that has a great Q & A about this challenge can be read here:
Understanding Swine Flu Outbreak: Questions and Answers
The positive news is that health officials feel that the virus has mutated as it traveled into the U.S. This is why there has been no deaths and less cases in the U.S. then Mexico. Because of the mutation, our bodies and immune system have a longer time to fight this virus off.
However, as a nation, we still need to care for ourselves even with this positive news.
So what does the swine flu have to do with our health and fitness levels?
If you haven’t read about some of Obama’s actions, here is a summary of what he stated:
“One thing is clear,” the president said. “Our capacity to deal with a public health challenge of this sort rests heavily on the work of our scientific community.
“This is one more example of why we cannot afford to let our nation fall behind,” he said, and “that is exactly what’s happening.”
“It is not in our character, the American character, to follow,” Obama said, delivering a “commitment” today to invest at least 3% of the GDP to research. “It is our character to lead.”
“At such a difficult moment, there are those who say we cannot afford to invest in science…. I fundamentally disagree,” said Obama, drawing applause from the academy as he called science more crucial “than it has ever been before.”
So as you can see Obama is prepared to invest heavily into the scientific community to be able to handle health challenges like the swine flu as well as increasing cures for the health problems that are floating around.
The importance of this message when it comes to your health is this:
Most people cut back on taking care of themselves, or they become comfortable with their lives where they allow their health to suffer. As a nation we are doing a poor job in caring for our bodies. It is not until we are faced with a major health problem individually or as a nation as a whole that we decided to do something about it.
It is crucial that we stay on top of our health and make it the number 1 priority. If you have fallen off track, get right back on. All it takes is an instant decision to make it happen.
If an outbreak like this doesn’t remind you step it up a notch in creating that change your health requires, then what will?
We would love to hear your comments on what drives you to create change with your health. What reminds you day in and day out to make your health your number 1 priority?
